      Synopsis

The ideal book for people who want to increase their word power. Focuses on more than 1,000 vocabulary words and introduces nearly 2,000 more - all organized by root for effective study. Includes quizzes to test progress.

      Annotation

The Merriam-Webster Vocabulary Builder allows you to enjoy informative and entertaining discussions of English words derived from Greek and Latin roots--and expand your working vocabulary at the same time. Words that share the same root are grouped for easy study. Quizzes let you test how much you've learned.

      Library Journal

This CD-ROM is based on the book of the same title (Merriam Webster, 1994), and we can tell you right away that the book has one major advantage: no corny "personal trainer" guides, that mar an otherwise good presentation. The goal here is to increase one's vocabulary through an understanding of the Latin and Greek roots of many words. There is a combination of games and quizzes as one travels though the disc. Beware: these are not always easy! Bottom Line: If they get rid of the personal trainers, then our itch will go away and we'll use this disc. Actually, even with them, this is still a useful disc. It works. Recommended for the home and for circulating collections.

August 15, 2007: I loved this book. It was very useful to me. It helped me remember words like antebellum 'existing before war' and bellicose 'warllike and aggresive'. I liked how it was set up. The only problem I had with this book was that it didn't say whether the word was a verb, adjective, adverb, noun, etc...
