    The Barnes & Noble Review

The war over women's reproductive rights, both in the United States and around the globe, is usually framed as a two-sided debate. On the one hand, pro-choice feminists advocate for all women to have full access to all family planning methods in order to ensure their full participation in society. On the other, anti-abortion conservatives decry the use of contraception and abortion, charging that they upset tradition gender roles.

But in The Means of Reproduction, Michelle Goldberg puts to rest the notion that this is a singular fight with only two opposing teams. She chronicles the development of the United States' role in reproductive rights abroad in all its complexity, from the movement's roots in the overpopulation scare to the intervention of the religious right in family planning policy to ideological clashes between feminists and local women's health activists to modern-day concerns over underpopulation in some nations.

    Synopsis

A groundbreaking new work on the global battle over reproductive rights by the author of The New York Times bestseller Kingdom Coming

Award-winning journalist Michelle Goldberg shows how the emancipation of women has become the key human rights struggle of the twenty-first century in The Means of Reproduction. Deeply reported across four continents, the book explores issues such as abortion, female circumcision, and Asia's missing girls to dramatize the connections between international policymaking and individual lives. Goldberg demonstrates how women's rights are key to addressing both overpopulation and rapid population decline, reducing world poverty, and retarding the spread of AIDS. Sweeping and ambitious, this is a must-read book for feminists, health and policy workers, and anyone concerned about the future of our world.

August 15, 2009: This is such and important topic Michelle Goldberg did such an incredible job. Whether you are talking about rape, abortion, female genital mutilation or women simply having the ability to support themselves - the point is for women to have the ability to make those choices. Forced abortions are just as bad as being denied an a abortion (even in cases such as an ectopic pregnancy).

August 03, 2009: This book explains the reasons for the pro choice movement. Even if a person is pro life, the option of having an abortion should never be taken away. It can mean life or death to thousands of women all over the world. Every man and woman should read this book, especially women though. It is our bodies that the religious fundamentalists are trying to control. I'm tired of it. Let's face it. Men dominate the churches and mosques, and have forever. We women need to stop them and say "Enough is enough." This book gives us the practical reasons why.
