December 06, 2001: This novel is written as a summary of events that take place in the lives of West Indian immigrants, in London, in the 1950's. The characters flock to the 'Mother-Land' in search of a better life , but are quickly faced by the stark reality, that there is no 'better life'. Through the characters, spear-headed by Moses, we see the futility and hopelessness of their lives in the 'new metropolis'. This book is written entirely in Trinidadian dialect and is often 'comical' in its approach. But beneath the 'comedy', are the sad lives of Moses, et al, who, even though they have failed so miserably in the 'New Land', would never return to the 'Old Land'; for even greater than the fear of living impoverished lives abroad, is the fear of admitting it to those back home. Well written and poignant.
