    Synopsis

The highly anticipated third book in the critically acclaimed and bestselling series takes the art of being wimpy to a whole new level.

Let’s face it: Greg Heffley will never change his wimpy ways. Somebody just needs to explain that to Greg’s father. You see, Frank Heffley actually thinks he can get his son to toughen up, and he enlists Greg in organized sports and other “manly” endeavors. Of course, Greg is able to easily sidestep his father’s efforts to change him. But when Greg’s dad threatens to send him to military academy, Greg realizes he has to shape up . . . or get shipped out.

Greg and his family and friends, who make the Diary of a Wimpy Kid books a must-read for middle school readers, are back and at their best in this hilarious new installment of the series, which is sure to please current fans while attracting new ones.

    Publishers Weekly-1/19/2009:

The third book in this genre-busting series is certain to enlarge Kinney’s presence on the bestseller lists, where the previous titles have taken up residence for the past two years. Kinney’s spot-on humor and winning formula of deadpan text set against cartoons are back in full force. This time, Greg starts off on New Year’s Day (he resolves to “help other people improve,” telling his mother, “I think you should work on chewing your potato chips more quietly”) and ends with summer vacation. As he fends off his father’s attempts to make him more of a man (the threat of military school looms), Greg’s hapless adventures include handing out anonymous valentines expressing his true feelings (“DearJames, You smell”), attempting to impress his classmate Holly and single-handedly wrecking his soccer team’s perfect season. Kinney allows himself some insider humor as well, with Greg noting the “racket” children’s book authors have going. “All you have to do is make up a character with a snappy name, and then make sure the character learns a lesson at the end of the book.” Greg, self-centered as ever, may be the exception proving that rule. Ages 8–12. (Jan.)

    Realistic Fiction

Have you ever been bullied? Greg Heffley in the book Diary of a Wimpy Kid The Last Straw By Jeff Kinney has and most of the bullying is from his older brother Rodrick. But recently Greg's father Frank Heffley has been hounding his son, Greg, to get more tough and in shape. He wants his son to be an athletic star or a macho man, not a boy anymore, a Man! Frank has been bugging Greg about it constantly and Greg can usually just avoid the subject but Frank wants Greg to be tough so badly he has threatened to send him to military school!!! Greg realized his dad was serious! Will Greg try out for more sports and toughen up or will he be shipped off to military school??

In the book there's the sweet little Manny who is obsessed with his blanket known as "Tingy" and then the weak video game player Greg who is very lazy every time he tries to prove he is not a wimp he always screws it up some how. Then there's Rodrick, the mean bully who is always pushing his brother around and trying to get away with things! Rodrick is the trouble causer and most of that trouble gets blamed on Greg! The characters in this story are either the tough bullies like Rodrick and his friends or small and wimpy like Greg and his friends! Greg and Rodrick have barely anything in common besides the fact that they are brothers!!

In my opinion this book was a page turner. Once I started reading the book i couldn't wait for the author to make the next one in the series! I think teens and preteens would enjoy the humor in this book! Preteens and teens tend to find violence very entertaining and interesting and this book is a funny kind of violence just right for them! This realistic fiction book drew me in right from the first sentence also how it is set up they set it up just like a diary ,is something new but very interesting! If you have read this book, I would hope you will read the other books in the series.. I highly recommend reading this book if you like to laugh!
