    Synopsis

All that matters for Cadi Forbes is finding the one man who can set her free from the sin that plagues her.  But Cadi doesn't know that this "sin eater" is seeking as well.  A captivating tale of suffering, seeking, and redemption.

    Library Journal

Even in her romances, Rivers (Redeeming Love, LJ 11/1/97) tackles some difficult issues, so this story of a family and a community in turmoil is different from her other books only in that it lacks a love interest. Ten-year-old Cadi's grief over her beloved grandmother--the only person who seemed to love her unconditionally--is compounded by a previous family tragedy for which she believes her family blames her. While at her grandmother's grave, Cadi sees the "sin eater," a human who absolves the residents of the tiny Smoky Mountain community of their sins. Somehow Cadi, touchingly portrayed by Rivers, comes to realize that the sin eater is false and learns of Jesus, and her conversion to Christianity leads to a reconciliation with her family. Rivers delivers both a powerful message about Christian beliefs and the need for forgiveness of sins and an evocative portrayal of life in the 1850s. Highly recommended.

June 07, 2008: Enlightening! After finishing the book, I realized it was about my own roots! Now I have a new motive for wanting to visit Scotland and meet extended family. In the meantime, I have a new appreciation for ongoing 'mountain missions' in the Appalachians. While I grieve for those who live/lived under the oppression of superstition, I'm ever grateful my own father learned The Way to true forgiveness when he was young and led us into Truth. I loved this book and was thrilled to see the beautiful movie which followed. Thank you, Francine Rivers, for using your skills to honor the Lord and promote His Kingdom.

February 22, 2008: Francine Rivers is such a prolific writer. She captures the essence of mountain life in this beautifully written novel. I love that she obviously researched the history of mountain culture, it's roots and superstitions. The book has a wonderful message. No matter what our sin, we have the precious gift of salvation and, once we receive it, it can never be taken away.
