October 21, 2009: The book Joy Luck Club, by Amy Tan, is one of the most intriguing and riveting books I have ever read. The mood of the entire book, and the ability to relate, is what makes this reading so brilliant, however, the melancholy feeling in many scenes may not always suite the reader.

Throughout this book, the mood is conveyed in a very clear and crisp way, making the reader feel the story. When the author Amy Tan describes the anger and frustration, I can feel my face growing hot, and my teeth clench, and when the victorious scenes are shown, I cannot help but smile and feel joyful too. As the lives of the four mothers and daughters are brought to life, the small details of the pond or the clouds, adds to the mood, and gives this book the aspects of a great narrative.

Because the plot centers on the relationship of a mother and daughter, a vast range of people are able to relate to the stories told. Although as not as extreme, many mothers and daughters are able to understand the situations, and this helps the visualization of the narrations. I would specifically recommend this to mothers and their teenage and young adult daughters.

Although the book is very captivating, this may not be appropriate for kids up until their teenage years. This is because of a few graphic scenes of injuries and deaths, as well as very many disheartening and discouraging moments that may cause some to feel anxious or afraid.

Even though this book may not be for all ages, the writing is very precise, fascinating, and unforgettable. The excellent description of even the smallest details, and the ability for many people to relate to some of the situations, makes Joy Luck Club a fantastic and superb writing for crying, laughing, and enjoying the adventures of life.

August 01, 2009: Really enjoyed this book! As an Asian-american, it was truly a relief to read about the trials & tribulations of a "typical" first generation Asian family. It allowed me to look back at my many frustrating conversations with my mother and laugh.... After reading this book, I didn't feel so alone.
