When Abbey's best friend, Kristen, vanishes at the bridge near Sleepy Hollow Cemetery, everyone else is all too quick to accept that Kristen is dead?and rumors fly that her death was no accident. Abbey goes through the motions of mourning her best friend, but privately, she refuses to believe that Kristen is really gone. Then she meets Caspian, the gorgeous and mysterious boy who shows up out of nowhere at Kristen's funeral, and keeps reappearing in Abbey's life. Caspian clearly has secrets of his own, but he's the only person who makes Abbey feel normal again...but also special.

Just when Abbey starts to feel that she might survive all this, she learns a secret that makes her question everything she thought she knew about her best friend. How could Kristen have kept silent about so much? And could this secret have led to her death? As Abbey struggles to understand Kristen's betrayal, she uncovers a frightening truth that nearly unravels her—one that will challenge her emerging love for Caspian, as well as her own sanity.

    Children's Literature

For the high school students who have fallen in love with the supernatural, Verday's first novel will sweep them away. This is a ghost story set in the heart of America's first ghost story, Sleepy Hollow. Each chapter begins with quotes from Washington Irving's famous story and details from the actual setting and story are intertwined with the developing love story between Abbey and Caspian. Abbey's best friend, Kristen, drowns in a tragic accident that no one can explain. Did she slip? Did she hit her head? Why was she walking under the bridge? Even the secret journal Abbey finds gives no indication of Kristen's intent that night. Abbey and Kristen often walked through the cemetery in Sleepy Hollow and now Abbey befriends the caretaker and his wife while she visits her friend's grave. Abbey's loss and despair is lessened by meeting the charming, and devastatingly handsome, Caspian Crane. Having already graduated from nearby White Plains, Caspian has secrets of his own but Abbey finds a soul mate in him, someone who understands the loss that threatens Abbey's mental health and well being. How can she be who she wants to be without Kristen? Abbey's ambition is to become a businesswoman. She dreams of parlaying her interest and talent in making perfumes into her own local store, but college is on the mind of her parents and she cannot seem to talk to them about any alternative. She never has had many friends and without Kristen she feels the loneliness deeply. Caspian brings friendship and romance into a life torn by tragedy and high school angst. Having met these haunting haunted characters, readers will no doubt be lining up for the story's continuation. Reviewer: JanisFlint-Ferguson

January 17, 2010: I love the story because Abbey and Capsian are put in a very difficult romantic situation. It makes you think how they can work it out. They obviously love each other so much but are bound by restraints. After the first couple of chapters I got really curious and then I couldn't put it down. I was sick in bed for a couple days so it was perfect, lol. As the end started nearing, it got WAY more interesting. Now I can't wait for The Haunting (the second novel in the series) to come out. Come on Sept 2010!!! The best part? At Jessica Verday's (author) website: www.jessicaverday.com, not only can u learn a bit more about her inspiration for the story but you can also buy bottles of perfume from Abbey's Hollow! This is some really great stuff.

January 13, 2010: In THE HOLLOW by Jessica Verday, Abbey's world is shattered the day that her best friend, Kristen, disappears at the bridge near Sleepy Hollow Cemetery. The cemetery was one of their favorite places to hang out, and Abbey continues to visit there. She soon meets Caspian and quickly falls in love with him. But their relationship isn't normal. He makes her feel special, but she is never sure of his feelings for her.

Just when the world seems to be slowing, getting put back together, she learns that Kristen was keeping secrets from her. Feeling hurt and betrayed, she wonders if this secret could have led to her death. And then she realizes that Caspian is keeping secrets from her, too, and her world once again comes crashing down on her.

When I first saw this book, I thought it would take forever for me to read since it was over 500 pages, but I found myself flying through it. I really enjoyed the character of Abbey. I thought she was completely believable and seemed like a real teenager. The writing was very well done. I could feel Abbey's pain of losing her best friend, as well as the joy of falling in love for the first time. And I thought it was neat that her hobby was making perfumes.

The only complaint I have about the story would be that it became more about the relationship between Abbey and Caspian, and it left me wanting to know more about how and why Kristen died and if it had anything to do with the secrets she kept. But that's not to say that I didn't enjoy the relationship between Abbey and Caspian, because I did.

THE HOLLOW is the first book in a trilogy, and I can't wait to find out what happens between them!
