    Synopsis

"In a hole in the ground, there lived a hobbit." So begins one of the most beloved and delightful tales in the English language. Set in the imaginary world of Middle-earth, at once a classic myth and a modern fairy tale, The Hobbit is one of literature's most enduring and well-loved novels. This gift edition, with new watercolor paintings by the artist Alan Lee, celebrates the sixtieth anniversary of the first publication in 1937.

    Annotation

    Horn Book Guide

All those, young or old, who love a finely imagined story, beautifully told, will take The Hobbit to their hearts.

    Biography

It seems an unlikely formula for success: an Oxford professor of Anglo-Saxon, and a book that begins with a little man who lives in a hole in the ground. But The Hobbit, followed by The Lord of the Rings, created the modern genre of heroic fantasy and made J.R.R. Tolkien one of the most widely-read authors in the world.

August 02, 2009: This is a fabulous edition of the Hobbit. We purchased it for our family library. My children loved the illustrations. It is a bit pricy - but a wonderful addition to any collection.

December 16, 2008: My favorite Tolkien book is here... actually this is my favorite book ever. This will be the second and soon to be third time I've read it. Tolkien's the Hobbit is amazing. And sense there isn't even a live action movie for it you have no excuse but to read it. the Edition i'm reviewing is also beautifully illustrated by my favorite and very creative artist Alan Lee. If you like the Lord of the Rings or not this isn't the same book all over again. To me, even though i loved the lord of the rings, this book seems as if written by a different author.

The story is about a young hobbit named bilbo who is unexpectedly visited by a company of dwarves and a wizard called gandalf. They want bilbo to assist them in re-taking the lonely mountain which is currently guarded by the great dragon Smaug. Over the course of an exciting journey and the eventual end the reader barely notices the pages goes by as you are drawn into the story.

ERAGON IS NO SUBSTITUTE!!! READ THE REAL STUFF, NOT THE MOCKERY OF IT!!!!!!!

I Also Recommend: Inheritance Cycle 3-Book Boxed Set (Eragon, Eldest, Brisingr), The Lord of the Rings.
