Synopsis

Whisked away from his comfortable, unambitious life in his hobbit-hole by Gandalf the wizard and a company of dwarves, Bilbo Baggins finds himself caught up in a plot to raid the treasure hoard of Smaug the Magnificent, a large and very dangerous dragon.

Annotation

Bilbo Baggins, a respectable, well-to-do hobbit, lives comfortably in his hobbit-hole until the day the wandering wizard Gandalf chooses him to take part in an adventure from which he may never return.

Horn Book Guide

All those, young or old, who love a finely imagined story, beautifully told, will take The Hobbit to their hearts.

Biography

It seems an unlikely formula for success: an Oxford professor of Anglo-Saxon, and a book that begins with a little man who lives in a hole in the ground. But The Hobbit, followed by The Lord of the Rings, created the modern genre of heroic fantasy and made J.R.R. Tolkien one of the most widely-read authors in the world.

November 29, 2008: This is a book that throws complicated out the window and says only one thing, adventure. Tolkien has a very old-timey, sit on Grandpa's lap type story telling ability that I just loved in this book. Many different things happen to these characters that makes you like them. This book succeeds best at what it was written for, to entertain.

I Also Recommend: The Eye of the World.

October 31, 2008: This book was given to me by my father when I was around 8 or 9, I think and was the precursor to most of my literary preferences until I turned 24 or so.
It was the first book I read; if you're a parent, I recommend giving it to your child early. It's an easy read, it's deep and it's simple, it has sequels, almost anyone can relate to it, it's a classic and it's not (because it's not related to Earth). And it's on school book lists now. But adults should read it, too. Hmmm... that reminds me that it's about time for me to pull it out and read it yet again. Why? It's just one of those that's worth reading at least thirty times in a lifespan. As of this review, I'm 26 and up to about ten times.
Aside from all of that, it was one of the beginnings of fantasy literature and references/similarities to it and it's sequels can be found even in so much fictional literature, it's stupid that people aren't original enough these days.

I Also Recommend: The Lord of the Rings.
