    Biography

It seems an unlikely formula for success: an Oxford professor of Anglo-Saxon, and a book that begins with a little man who lives in a hole in the ground. But The Hobbit, followed by The Lord of the Rings, created the modern genre of heroic fantasy and made J.R.R. Tolkien one of the most widely-read authors in the world.

November 29, 2009: "The Hobbit" is a great fantasy book full of adventure and action. This book is a very easy book to get hooked on and will constantly keep you on your toes with anticipation. Some of the characters personalities change over the course of this book. Also you see how much more you can find in yourself by extending your comfort zone. Tolkien does a great job of continuously keeping your interests by adding new twists around every corner whether it be fending off giant spiders or escaping goblins hidden in the mountains. as a brief summary, Bilbo Baggins (a respected hobbit) gets invited to full fill one of his most wildest fantasies. Along the way he faces new challenges at every turn and meets new friends as well as a few enemies, in the end he learns that friendship is one value that should be valued and honored at any cost. I really liked the plot and the overall theme of the story. Another thing that interested me was the action that this book has. some dislikes that I had was that the dialogue was not very understandable at some points. Other books i would recommend are the following Tolkien books : The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers, and The Return of the King. Overall i would give this book 2 thumbs up for being action packed and full of adventure.

November 21, 2009: Very few books are worth the fancy boxed special edition, but as a beloved classic, the hobbit certainly warrants the extra cash spent. though not as rich a story perhaps as the lord of the rings trilogy (which is also worth the deluxe edition) i've always preferred the hobbit. it was written in a more light-hearted fashion and is by far more charming as a result as opposed to the dark and brooding trilogy. I like how each chapter, almost, can function as its own mini story as the party gets "out of the frying pan and into the fire" time and again. each chapter makes for a nice bedtime story as an easy paced read. and of course i just love that reticent hero Bilbo Baggins.

I Also Recommend: The Lord of the Rings.
