Biography

It seems an unlikely formula for success: an Oxford professor of Anglo-Saxon, and a book that begins with a little man who lives in a hole in the ground. But The Hobbit, followed by The Lord of the Rings, created the modern genre of heroic fantasy and made J.R.R. Tolkien one of the most widely-read authors in the world.

October 12, 2009: I keep coming back to Tolkien every 20 years. I read The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings at age 13, again at 33, and after recently reading The Silmarillion at age 53 my appetited was again whetted for these favorites.

So I decided to treat myself to nice hardbound copies (having lost or loaned the paperbacks editions I'd had), and I am pleased to report that this hardcover edition of The Hobbit is very nice and a proud addition to my libarary.

The book comes in a sturdy matching slipcase, includes the author's illustrations and maps, and is printed in highly readable type on heavy paper stock. It just feels like a good book in your hands, and one that you will not want to read while eating greasy food. (i.e. You'll want to care for and treasure this volume.)

As The Hobbit sets up the conditions for the end of the Third Age of Middle-earth, I would highly recommend reading The Silmarillion first -- which covers the First & Second Ages --, and The Lord of the Rings last. In fact, I kept my copy of The Silmarillion close at hand and referred to it quite a bit while rereading The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings; so many are the references to characters, places, and events that ocurred in the 1st and 2nd Ages of Middle-earth.
