    Reviewer:Nicholas T Leone, M.D. (Thomas Jefferson University)
Description:This is a practical collection of succinctly explained diagnostic and operative urologic procedures, with an emphasis on those performed in the office setting.
Purpose:Given the current practice trends in urology, a significant portion of urologists find themselves primarily, or even exclusively, performing minor operations in an outpatient setting, including scrotal and transurethral surgery, prostate needle biopsy, and shock wave lithotripsy. This book provides a practical description of such procedures in a readily accessible, chapter-based format. Of course, a more thorough description can be found in a traditional urologic surgical atlas, but this book serves a more practical purpose by providing a collection of only the most common, office-based procedures performed in urology, and it meets its objective well.
Audience:This is a readily accessible source of information for students, residents, physician extenders, and referring primary care physicians unfamiliar with the specific steps involved in common urologic procedures. It also serves as a straightforward review for practitioners whose urologic practice involves infrequent performance of such procedures.
Features:The book provides a basic overview of common surgical equipment, including suture material and urethral catheters, as well as a brief description of electrosurgical diathermy. A chapter outlines local anesthetic techniques that are readily applicable to many of the procedures described later in the book. Transrectal ultrasound, urodynamics, and cystoscopy are described, asthese diagnostic procedures are among the most common tests used in urologic evaluation. The majority of the book focuses on common outpatient urologic procedures, including scrotal and testicular surgery and penile and transurethral procedures.
Assessment:The chapters are concise and straightforward, providing a basic overview of the procedures. This book should prove useful to any healthcare provider interested in and unfamiliar with these common, office-based urologic procedures.
