      Synopsis

Oscar is short, like all dachshunds and other dogs make fun of him. On Halloween he takes more ridicule than ever in his hot-dog costume, but one brave act makes him a hero. Color illustrations throughout. A "School Library Journal" Best of the Best of 1995.

      Annotation

All the other dogs make fun of Oscar the dachshund until one Halloween when, dressed as a hot dog, Oscar bravely rescues the others.

      Publishers Weekly

Costumed by his mother as a hot dog with bun, Oscar the dachshund goes from hangdog to top dog in what PW's starred review called a "pun-o-rama." Ages 4-7. (Sept.) Copyright 1999 Cahners Business Information.

October 10, 2006: This story is fun for kids of all ages who love Halloween, Dogs, and a cleverly told tale. Presented through Pilkey's humorous drawings of an optimistic, but lowly wiener dog who overcomes the teasing of 'friends' about his unusual appearance, a well meaning mom, and a tacky costume. Through his kind heart (he doesn't want to hurt his mom's feelings), bravery, and forgiving spirit he and his detractors learn the true meaning of friendship and that things aren't always what they seem. A fun children's read with plenty of references that adults will enjoy as well.
