    Synopsis

One of our most universal myths is that of the Green Man—the spirit who stands for Nature in its most wild and untamed form. Through the ages and around the world, the Green Man and other nature spirits have appeared in stories, songs, and artwork, as well as many beloved fantasy novels, including Tolkien's Lord of the Rings. Now Ellen Datlow and Terri Windling, the acclaimed editors of over thirty anthologies, have gathered some of today's finest writers of magical fiction to interpret the spirits of nature in short stories and poetry. Folklorist and artist Charles Vess brings his stellar eye and brush to the decorations, and Windling provides an introduction exploring Green Man symbolism and forest myth. The Green Man is required reading—not only for fans of fantasy fiction but for those interested in mythology and the mysteries of the wilderness.

    Annotation

A collection of stories and poems by a variety of authors relating to the Green Man and other myths of the forest.

    Book Magazine

The fifteen short stories and three poems in this absorbing collection explore the magic of the forest. Some tales draw on traditional material, but others depart from familiar depictions of the woods. One story finds a teenager in Central Park matching wits with a modern fairy in green leather and dreadlocks, while another features a teen who leaves a wild party to encounter powerful desert forces in Joshua Tree National Park. Notes about the well-known and lesser-known contributors will guide voracious readers to further fantasy reading. —Kathleen Odean

August 21, 2009: I brought this book on vacation with me and finished all of the stories before I even arrived at my destination! I adored a good deal of the stories and enjoyed a good deal of the rest. The ones that stuck out the most to me were Grand Central Park, Daphne, Somewhere in My Mind There Is a Painting Box, A World Painted by Birds, and Grounded. These stories were unforgettable and are absolutely must reads for any genre.
