      Synopsis

Jancsi is overjoyed to hear that his cousin from Budapest is coming to spend the summer on his father's ranch on the Hungarian plains. But their summer proves more adventurous than he had hoped when headstrong Kate arrives, as together they share horseback races across the plains, country fairs and festivals, and a dangerous run-in with the gypsies.

In vividly detailed scenes and beautiful illustrations, this Newbery Award-winning author presents an unforgettable world and characters who will be remembered forever.

February 07, 2004: This book and the one folling it have stayed with me since the fourth grade. My teacher read them aloud to the class and I have never forgotten the pleasure we felt listening to her(it is my understanding she reads them every year). This pleasant memory is the reason I've spent years trying to find the series. I would highly recommend this book to anyone.

August 31, 2001: I read Kate Seredy's books as a child in the 50's. I liked the stories, the characters, the settings, and have re-read them many times over the years. She does not sanitize difficulties and hardship; her characters are real, with human failings. But what made the greatest and most lasting impression on me were her illustrations. While other girls were drawing horses, I was drawing horses and Hungarian costumes. I was fascinated by the traditional clothing, the pleats, the embroidery. When I was twelve, my parents started my collection: a beautiful pleated silk, embroidered woman's costume from Posavina (Croatia)(as close as I could get to Hungary at the time). Kate Seredy's books are directly responsible for my life-long interest in and study of ethnic costume, particularly of Eastern Europe and the Balkans. While this is not a review of the usual type, I think it is important for people to realize how just one book or author or illustrator can have such a wonderful, long-lasting effect on a person's life. I wish Seredy was still alive so I could thank her.
