    Synopsis

On July 20, 1969, the Eagle -- the lunar module of the Apollo 11 mission -- landed on the Moon. This book explores the amazing achievement of the Apollo program, which pushed space technology to new heights. It follows the astronauts in their exciting journey to the Moon and their first steps on the Moon's surface. After Apollo, U.S. space science continued to make important advances. These achievements are detailed here, along with the creation of the International Space Station, an important step toward cooperation in space among separate nations.

    Joella Peterson - Children's Literature

Part of the "Events That Shaped America" series, this book describes the first moon landing, the events that led to the landing, and the influence of the lunar landing on America. The text is clear. Difficult or unusual words are highlighted and placed in a glossary at the end of the book. The book also includes a time line, an index, a list of further information, and a list of things to "think about and do." The activities suggested vary from learning about how big the universe really is to imagining what it would be like to be on the moon or living in space. These activities are fairly easy, but have great potential to stretch the imagination. The book also includes many pictures to help the readers see what they are reading about, or who the monumental people were in the space program. This is a good book for curious young readers or those doing reports. 2004, Gareth Stevens Publishing, Ages 8 to 12.
