    Synopsis

The Father of Spin is the first full-length biography of the legendary Edward L. Bernays, who, beginning in the 1920s, was one of the first and most successful practioners of the art of public relations. In this engrossing biography, Larry Tye uses Bernays's life as a prism to understand the evolution of the craft of public relations and how it came to play such a critical-and sometimes insidious-role in American life.

Drawing on interviews with primary sources and voluminous private papers, Tye presents a fascinating and revealing portrait of the man who, more than any other, defined and personified public relations, a profession that today helps shape our political discourse and define our commercial choices.

    NY Times

[Mr. Tye] succeeds wonderfully in illustrating the often creepy power of our opinion makers.

February 22, 2004: Larry Tye tells the fascinating story of Eddy Bernays, one of the major figures in the development of modern Public Relations. Bernays was a nephew of Sigmund Freud and much of his business was based on appealing to peoples psychology. From this book, we can see how Bernays was able to develop PR strategies for so many products such as books and bananas, from Mack trucks to Lucky Strikes and even foreign countries. They are all interesting and amazing. One of the very interesting and knowledgeable thing that Eddy has done was the promotion of Lucky Strike. When tobacco companies (company of Lucky Strike) realized that there was a social taboo against women smoking in public and blocked their road to develop the female market, they found Eddy Bernays for help. He had a parade of women march down a New York City avenue bearing their 'torches of freedom' & soon the taboo was gone. This book is worth to read. However, the author seemed to have a negative thought in writing the story of this ??PR genius??. For every positive thing that the author says about Bernays, there is a negative thing to follow and judge it.

August 16, 2002: Prepare to delve into history with this book. I loved learning about Bernays, and how the world of PR began. Our modern world revolves around the spin cycle, and as a PR student, this book tells the real story behind all of the lessons in the textbooks that I had to read.
