    Synopsis

magical, multigenerational saga encompassing two hundred years in the life of an unforgettable family--a book of love stories, ill-fated and blessed, sensuous as a dream, unfolding in a time and a place where fable is more potent than fact, where the imagination is more powerful than any truth, where the line between myth and history has all but

    Book Magazine

Eve's compelling first novel, spanning six generations of a family in Jerusalem, brims with grand passions, magical folk tales and stories of contraband and spies. Each chapter begins with a diary-style entry written by Eve's father, whose historical snippets steal the show. Set against his thrilling, real-life accounts of life among settlers in Palestine are Eve's fictionalized anecdotes. Eve's version of her family history is filled with wonderfully quirky characters—a kleptomaniac bride, a phantom son and a man who tries to conjure a folkloric creature by pressing his naked butt into the soil. Eve's characters, however, are not strong enough to anchor the story; there's no one to root for or despise. And her metaphors—"death you can eat like candy"—can be awkward. But you can still soak up the details, even when the plot meanders.

May 15, 2001: The author never developed the characters. It was a very frustrating read and I would NOT recommend it.

March 02, 2001: This book had so much promise, but the author neglected to create a plot for the characters. The chronicle of this family was disjointed and left the reader unconnected. It was a frustrating read.
