Synopsis

In the days following September 11, the most powerful people in the country were panic-stricken. The decisions about how to combat terrorists and strengthen national security were made in a state of utter chaos and fear, but the key players, Vice President Dick Cheney and his powerful, secretive adviser David Addington, used the crisis to further a long-held agenda to enhance presidential powers to a degree never known in U.S. history.

The Dark Side is a riveting narrative account of how the U.S. made terrible decisions in the pursuit of terrorists–decisions that not only violated the Constitution, but also hampered the pursuit of Al Qaeda. In gripping detail, acclaimed New Yorker writer and bestselling author Jane Mayer relates specific cases, shown in real time against the larger tableau of Washington, looking at the intelligence gained–or not–and the price paid. In all cases, whatever the short-term gains, there were incalculable losses in terms of moral standing, our country’s place in the world, and its sense of itself. The Dark Side chronicles one of the mostdisturbing chapters in American history, one that will serve as the lasting legacy of the George W. Bush presidency.

The New York Times - Alan Brinkley

a powerful, brilliantly researched and deeply unsettling book…The Bush administration is not, of course, the first or only regime to violate civil liberties. John Adams, Abraham Lincoln, Woodrow Wilson and Franklin Roosevelt all authorized or tolerated terrible violations of civil and human rights, all of them in response to great national and global crises. In some respects, the Bush administration is simply following a familiar path by responding to real dangers with illegal and deplorable methods. But Jane Mayer's extraordinary and invaluable book suggests that it would be difficult to find any precedent in American history for the scale, brutality and illegality of the torture and degradation inflicted on detainees over the last six years; and that it would be even harder to imagine a set of policies more likely to increase the dangers facing the United States and the world.

An Excellent Read, But...by WilliamE

July 01, 2009: The Dark Side is a compelling and well written study on the excess of power. It drove home to me the need for rules and checks. Dick Cheney, George Bush, David Addington and the other leaders of the Bush Administration appear to have lost sight that the rule of law is not just for the easy times, but is especially necessary in times of national stress.

While Ms. Mayer does an excellent job stating her case, I found her voice a bit too biased. I am a little bothered by her over use of unnamed sources. While it may be difficult to give true credence to the arguments in favor of extreme executive power and the abuse of human rights, I would have found the book a bit more credible if Ms. Mayer hadn't given those views more than just lip service mentioning.

Overall, I think this book should be mandatory reading for any American regardless of their political leanings.

I Also Recommend: 1000 Years for Revenge, The Interrogators, The Gamble.

the Liberal mind-setby Larissaantipoch

February 04, 2009: Every liberal wants to bash the Bush administration for the problems in Iraq. They seem to forget that the democrats had their hands in it too before GW Bush came into play. Yes, he and his advisor made mistakes, but he is not alone in that. Ms. Mayer comes from the mindset of so many young women today who profess certain ideals but adhere to none. They see only what they want to see. As far as a "war on american ideals"- it is the far-left liberals who are destroying this country.Destroying traditions and black-listing anyone who does not have the same ideology as they. These same liberals pay attention to the Hollywood loons who mouth off about the politics used in Iraq. I still see the Barbara Streisannds and the Alec Baldwins and the Susan Sarandons still staying here. Why?. If our policies are so corrupt, then why do they stay? The answer is because they realize that there is no other place they can go and be able to speak their mind without getting themselves "blacklisted" or worse yet- killed. I came from such a country where freedom of speech was not permitted.
Ms. Mayer may be informed and educated but she should write about facts and not what she feels. We don't need authors such as she.
