    Synopsis

Bakan (law, U. of British Columbia) sees a corporation—i.e. the large Anglo-American publicly traded business corporation—as a "pathological institution, a dangerous possessor of the great power it wields over people and societies." Drawing on in-depth interviews with players from the corporate world, Bakan explores what exactly a corporation as an institution truly is. He examines how the corporation became what it is today; the nature, and implications, of its pathological character and its power over society; and what should and can be done to mitigate its potential to cause harm. While academic, the text has been intentionally written to be accessible to both the professional and lay reader. Annotation ©2004 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR

April 01, 2007: I saw Bakan's video of his book and it is excellent. Highly recommend it to anyone interested in reading about one of the most insidious, pervasive, destructive forces on our planet today--the pathological masculine psyche. I am a psychotherapist and the nexus between masculine pathology 'narcissitic personality disorder, sociopathy and psychopathy' and world problems is an invisible web of power, deceit and corruption that will be the death of us all if left unchecked. See the video. We do have shining examples of the mature masculine consciousness in persons like Noam Chomsky who are diligently trying to raise consciousness on the planet. These are the men who are beacons of hope for peace and justice in the world. I honor Bakan's exemplary book and its timely message.

October 15, 2006: A thought-provoking read, perfect for those who work in large corporations yet find themselves so frazzled by constant deadlines and the 'daily grind' that they lose sight of the big picture. I finished this book in a weekend, because it's extremely absorbing and clear rather than overly academic. I found Bakan's discussion of corporate social responsibility especially fascinating, as well as his exploration of the discrepancy (and sometimes, extreme IRONY) between our values as human beings and our values as employees of major corporations...Highly recommended for corporate employees, execs and students contemplating their future careers and values!
