      Biography

The late Georgette Heyer was a very private woman. Her historical novels have charmed and delighted millions of readers for decades, though she rarely reached out to the public to discuss her works or private life. It is known that she was born in Wimbledon in August 1902, and her first novel, The Black Moth, was published in 1921.

Heyer published 56 books over the next 53 years, until her death from lung cancer in 1974. Heyer's large volume of works included Regency romances, mysteries and historical fiction. Known also as the Queen of Regency romance, Heyer was legendary for her research, historical accuracy and her extraordinary plots and characterizations. Her last book, My Lord John, was published posthumously in 1975. She was married to George Ronald Rougier, a mining engineer, and they had one son together, Richard.

February 09, 2005: Georgette Heyer deserves better covers! The ones she usually gets make her look no different than the 100s of wannabes that came after her, and could do nothing but get the framework right--an anatomically correct body without an animating spark! Heyer continues to be read and reprinted because of the quality and wit of her writing--her meticulous historical research, her delightfully sharp and often humorous dialogue. One doesn't read her for the plots: 'What the devil does the plot signify, except to bring in fine things?' And the Corinthian, with the elegant Sir Richard, the endlessly inventive Pen, and the colorful Jimmy Yarde (whose speeches are an enduring delight to me) make this novel full of very fine things!

December 31, 2002: A great romp. Very readable, with lots of comic moments. I love Heyer's writing - she immerses herself in the Regency period, and it simply flows from her pen. She presents nothing in her story that does not have a purpose in it. Great characterizations. No disjointed/vague/fumbling narratives here. I thoroughly enjoyed it.
