In 1925 Nome was threatened by a diphtheria epidemic. The medicine was hundred of miles away in Anchorage and the winter weather made airplane and train travel impossible. To solve the problem, the people of Alaska participated in a sled dog relay with twenty teams. In the next to the last leg, a man named Gunnar and his lead dog Balto took over. They ran through a blizzard, and avoided cracked ice, but when they reached the next to last stop, the relief dog sled team was not there. Exhausted they continued to Nome and delivered the medicine. February 05, 2009: My 6 year old daughter LOVES this book. We have read it many times and she loves the movie as well. It's a story about a team of sled dogs, lead by Balto that deliver medicine to a snowy town during a storm. It is a very heartwarming and courageous story. Balto saves his girlfriend's owner, a little girl, and the rest of the infected in this town. It is a true story and there is actually a statue of Balto in Central Park which endears my daughter to the story more since we live in NYC. It is suitable for 6 and up, and my daughter who is an excellent reader can read it on her own. However, we prefer reading it together. Wonderful first chapter book for starting readers. Good for a boy or girl.
