      Synopsis

The female leg is a sexual oddity. Its non-genital, nearly identical in structure to the corresponding male body part, and there is no obvious reason why it should be eroticized. Yet, through much of history, across many cultures, the female leg was hidden from sight and treated as such a taboo topic that it became an object of intense sexual obsession. In the Victorian era, the word leg was so forbidden that it couldnt be uttered in polite society. Even now, 80 years after women legs came out of hiding, their allure remains strong. In this third book of Dian Hanson wildly successful body parts series, she explores how freeing the female leg became central to women liberation, beginning with the French Revolution and ending with the sexual revolution. Learn who wore the first high heels, how nylons became a weapon of war, why Betty Grable were the million dollar legs, while enjoying great vintage photos by Irving Klaw Batters, and other great masters of leg art.

August 01, 2009: The Big Book of Legs is the latest addition to a particularly groundbreaking and throughly well-reasoned and researched series of books produced by editor Dian Hanson and published by swiss publisher Taschen. Just as it's predecessors in this series, "The Big Breast Book" and "The Big Penis Book" were able to provide extraordinary, superior quality photography, insightul commentary and historical sidenotes on the history of the general public's "obsession" with whichever body part is literally "on view", The Big Book of Legs allows anyone with whatever interest they may have in the material on view to gleam something far more significant than a mere "Cheap Thrill".

As an illustrator, my main interest in this material along with the other books in this series lies in using it's expansive photographic canon (which is broken into genre type, along with period and era separation, thus denoting how this particular body quadrant has been depicted...or, in some cases, despised...over the course of recorded history and the epoch of photography) for art reference purposes. However, if the reader is an avid student of arcane history (as I, too, am), this book, along with the other books in this series, will literally serve as a textbook (at a hefty 425 pages) on all things sensual, silly and sublime.

I Also Recommend: Big Book of Breasts, Big Penis Book, Girls, Guns and Ropes.
