Synopsis

Three years have passed since the magician Nathaniel helped prevent a cataclysmic attack on London. Now an established member of the British Government, he faces unprecedented problems: foreign wars are going badly; Britain’s enemies are mounting attacks close to London; and rebellion is fomentingamong the commoners. Increasingly imperious and distracted, Nathaniel is treating Bartimaeus worse than ever. The longsuffering djinni is growing weak and vulnerable from too much time in this world and is nearing the end of his patience.

Meanwhile, Nathaniel’s longtime rival Kitty has been stealthily completing her research on magic, demons, and Bartimaeus’s past. She has a daring plan that she hopes will break the endless cycle of conflict between djinn and humans. But will anyone listen to what she has to say?

In this glorious conclusion to the Bartimaeus trilogy, the destinies of Bartimaeus, Nathaniel, and Kitty converge once more. Together the threesome faces treacherous magicians, a complex conspiracy, and a rebellious faction of demons. To survive, they must test the limits of this world and question the deepest parts of themselves. And most difficult of all–they will have to learn to trust one another.

Jonathan Stroud is the author of the New York Times bestselling Bartimaeus Trilogy; The Last Siege; The Leap; and Buried Fire. He lives in England with his family.

Child Magazine

"I was no longer the carefree Bartimaeus of old," complains the 5,000-year-old djinni (genie), weakened by the incessant demands of his master. As in the previous two installments, Bartimaeus's wry, funny quips join with a heart-pounding plot to enthrall fans and newcomers alike. In a magical London, Nathaniel, a career-obsessed 17-year-old magician and British cabinet member, forms an uneasy alliance with Bartimaeus and a courageous commoner named Kitty to battle demons and magicians that have run amok. All the themes nurtured in previous books-friendship, loyalty, the temptations of power and position-are explored in a shocking, deeply satisfying conclusion. This is an excellent choice for older, more sophisticated readers. (Ages 8 to 12)

May 12, 2009: Like every book series we've come to love know that eventually it has to come to an end. Such is the case with the Bartimaeus trilogy. The writing was excellent especially the descriptions and of course the characters. We have the finale that has has Kitty, Bartimaeus, Nat and the magicians coming together thanks to the rebellion attack of genies and demons taking over as hosts to some of the humans. A fate is decided for one of the three. I thought the ending was a little quick and should of added more to it but overall the series is very suspenseful leaving you wanting to turn page after page. If you like Harry Potter and the show Doctor Who, these books may remind you of that (it did me anyway). In conclusion a satisfying finale none the less to three awesome books.

I Also Recommend: Harry Potter Hardcover Boxed Set (Books 1-7), The Golem's Eye (Bartimaeus Trilogy Series #2), Amulet of Samarkand (Bartimaeus Trilogy Series #1), Ender's Game (Ender Wiggin Series #1).
