From a world-renowned neurologist, the first book to feature a scientifically substantiated program for the only treatment for Alzheimer's: PREVENTION
Alzheimer's is a devastating and frightening disease, and as baby boomers age it's on the brink of becoming the great epidemic of the twenty-first century. Fortunately, by making proper lifestyle choices and avoiding certain risk factors, most people can prevent Alzheimer's, and it can be delayed in those who are genetically predisposed. The Anti- Alzheimer's Prescription presents a unique four-step program that includes menus, recipes, exercises, stress reduction techniques, and neurobics to lower the risk of Alzheimer's by as much as 70 percent.
Dr. Fortanasce, who witnessed his own father's painful decline from the disease, is determined to stop Alzheimer's from becoming pandemic.
Although Americans are living longer, healthier lives, the number of individuals diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease will increase dramatically as the baby boomers continue to age. The incidence of memory disorders in people in their fifties and sixties is already growing at a troubling rate, according to physician Fortanasce (neurology, Univ. of Southern California). Learning how to control the risk factors for dementia is essential to preventing or delaying the onset of memory disorders, he believes. To that end, he prescribes a diet of "brain boosting foods" like good fats, complex carbohydrates, and lean protein; a regimen of aerobic and strength training routines; "neurobics," memory-improving mental workouts; adequate sleep; stress management; and relaxation techniques. Also covered are tips for choosing a physician if a failing memory is cause for concern, available diagnostic techniques, the importance of getting an early diagnosis to slow disease progression, current medical treatments (including holistic remedies), an "Anti-Alzheimer's Diet Plan" accompanied by recipes, and a body mass calculator. Baby boomers with elderly parents or who are approaching later life will find this to be an authoritative guide to memory disorders. Highly recommended for consumer and aging health collections along with P. Murali Doraiswamy and Lisa P. Gwyther's The Alzheimer's Action Plan, Cathryn Jakobson Ramin's Carved in Sand: When Attention Fails and Memory Fades in Midlife, and Gary Small's The Memory Bible.

August 20, 2009: The Anti-Alzheimer's Prescription is an interesting look at one of the most dreaded diseases, Alzheimer's. The book presents a fact-filled guide to better health and what lifestyle changes you can make to help prevent the onset of the disease.
Broken down in three parts, Dr. Fortanasce first explains in layman's terms what is known about Alzheimer's and how to evaluate your personal risk factors. The second part of the book is a four-step plan to help prevent the disease by targeting specific health needs of your body and brain. Part Three is the diagnosis, treatment, and future of Alzheimer's disease. Dr. Fortanasce believes that even with a genetic predisposition to Alzheimer's that there are steps that can be taken to prevent or delay the disease. His experience as a neurologist, and even more personally with his own father, gives the doctor an insight into what lifestyle changes can be made to improve the odds of developing the disease. Using a science-based method with a holistic approach, the doctor gives health suggestions, exercises for both the body and the brain, relaxation techniques, and even menu plans with recipes. Especially interesting is the information on how important sleep is to our health and the importance of the treatment of sleep apnea. To say this is an important book is an understatement. Alzheimer's is such a devastating disease. If we can make smart choices in our life now, think of the impact we will make on our future.Reader Rating:

August 08, 2009: Let me note from the start that I read a lot of books. Non fiction books are my choice. And its NOT a book that is fear based!! The fact that top medical professionals at Stanford Medical School saw value in the book, was an added plus for me.
This book was a wonderful treat, because its so well written and all the information is informative, easy to read and so dang interesting. From diet to genetic testing, to the importance of sleep, exercise both mental and physical. On pages 62-63 there is a fun and informative test you can take to see if you are doing some things right, and what things you can change. Also appreciated page 97 where the author lists all the various names for high sugar ingredients. Most people are aware of white sugar and the cheap corn sugars that soda pop and other junk food contain, but as a label reader I think its important to do as the author does and list other names used for unhealthy sweeteners. Like Treacle, panocha, Maltose, Lactose, Galactose, Demerara sugar which we call dementia sugar. As a rule if I cannot pronounce the ingredient in a packaged food item I don't eat it. Page 103-106 have the Golden Dozen. Berries, Apples, Fish, Cruciferous vegetables (favorites of ours) like cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, brussel sprouts, Nuts, low fat dairy, Greens, dried beans and legumes, Soy items, Sweet potato, Tomato,Whole grains. Under the nut section, I was happy to see walnuts, almonds, hazelnuts, and cashews, and not just peanuts since some people have a sensitivity to peanuts. Being vegetarian and even vegan mode I was pleased with the huge choices the author offered. In fact there is no reason for someone to be bored when it comes to food issues. Loved Chapter 5 Brawn Boosters, because he goes in depth about the importance of exercise for dealing with stress, increases muscle mass, stimulates anabolic hormone production, builds brain mass and brain capacity. And how great to see some common sense FREE ideas on how to get more exercise. Like on page 127 the author notes things like park further away in the parking lot and walk to the store, get off the bus a few blocks further from work and walk, take the stairs, get up from your desk and walk around more. And beginning on page 157 the author has dozens and dozens of daily food plan ideas, as well as recipes that even the most manly of men will like. And I think people who are stressed and tired will find the book a wake up call, with easy to do changes that will make them healthier and happier. Even I, who has strived to live and eat healthy found some great suggestions that I have included in my daily life.
