Synopsis

Every few decades a book is published that changes the lives of its readers forever. The Alchemist is such a book. With over a million and a half copies sold around the world, The Alchemist has already established itself as a modern classic, universally admired. Paulo Coelho's charming fable, now available in English for the first time, will enchant and inspire an even wider audience of readers for generations to come.

The Alchemist is the magical story of Santiago, an Andalusian shepherd boy who yearns to travel in search of a worldly treasure as extravagant as any ever found. From his home in Spain he journeys to the markets of Tangiers and across the Egyptian desert to a fateful encounter with the alchemist.

The story of the treasures Santiago finds along the way teaches us, as only a few stories have done, about the essential wisdom of listening to our hearts, learning to read the omens strewn along life's path, and, above all, following our dreams.

San Francisco Chronicle

A magical little volume.

Customer Rating for this product is 4 out of 5 Great High School/College Freshman Reading

It's a great book for teens. Teens take everthing for granted, and desire fame and fortune like the protagonist. The story is about wisdom, determination, trust and honesty. All are virtues that the book ilustrates in inventive and wondrous ways. As an older person, I did find it a little bit incomplete. But if one is on an 'identity quest', it is one of the best brochures for living right that I've ever read.

I enjoyed this book very much. I would recommend it to all readers. It is a book that you will not want to stop reading. Paulo Coelho did a awesome job writing a great page turner. It is a book that I can relate to concerning dreams and the fear of disappointment when trying to fulfill them. It also helped me balance stress realizing to worry about the present than worry about the future. I'm looking forward to reading more from Coelho in the future.
