This two-volume book is a comprehensive reference that deals with all areas of small animal surgery. It includes good quality photographs and drawings of surgical procedures and some algorithms to help with surgical decision making. This is the second edition of this book; the first edition was published in 1985. The purpose is to provide the current, scientifically accepted facts of veterinary surgery. It is intended to be a definitive reference that includes all relevant and current material in each area. The first edition was an excellent reference and a second, more current edition, is a very worthwhile pursuit. This book meets the author's objectives well. The target audience includes veterinary students, surgery residents, practitioners, and veterinary surgeons. The information presented is appropriate for all of these audiences. The surgical procedures covered vary from simple, straightforward ones to complicated procedures and are applicable to all levels of surgical expertise. The authors of most chapters are well qualified to write in the designated areas. This book has introductory sections on surgical biology and surgical methods. It is then organized by body systems. Most of the systems sections start with a review of the pertinent anatomy and physiology, and then discuss specific problems encountered in small animal patients involving that body system. There are also sections on oncology and anesthesia. The book is well illustrated with photographs and line drawings of surgical conditions and procedures. The quantity and quality of references vary with t he individual contributors, but they are appropriate in most chapters. This two-volume set is the most complete smallanimal surgery reference available. It is a valuable reference tool for any small animal surgeon. The anatomy and physiology reviews of the body systems are very useful and nicely complement the discussions of surgically treated diseases. It is recommended as a reference for veterinary students, practitioners who perform surgery on small animal patients, veterinary surgeons, and libraries. The more current and complete information presented in this second edition make it a worthwhile investment.
