Description:In the third edition of this textbook, the two editors are joined by four associate editors and 117 contributors, representing pediatrics, emergency medicine, pediatric emergency medicine, and other appropriate specialties. A significant percentage of the contributors are from Pennsylvania and Massachusetts.
Purpose:The purpose is to provide a book that will help a practitioner know what to do when faced with a pediatric clinical problem and to show the steps to perform pediatric procedures.
Audience:The primary target audience is specialists in pediatric emergency medicine. In addition, this is a very useful text for any physician who may treat pediatric emergencies on a routine or infrequent basis. It is appropriate for residents and fellows as well as practicing physicians.
Features:This well-organized textbook is supported by hundreds of high-quality black-and-white photos, ultrasounds, CT scans, line drawings, graphs, and charts. Unfortunately, the limited number of color photos (there are only 16 color pictures) detracts somewhat from the dermatology and rash chapters. Algorithms are used effectively to further illustrate many pediatric evaluation and treatment options. Near the end of the book is a 135-page section on illustrated techniques of pediatric emergencyprocedures that i s well written and illustrated. This is followed by a valuable four-part appendix that includes lists of pediatric resuscitation equipment for both the emergency department and the office or clinic; a comprehensive emergency drugcompendium; parental instruction sheets; and a section of "practical information." Throughout the text contributors do not provide the usual footnotes or references for their chapters. Instead they furnish a list of worthwhile suggested readings that are divided by subjects found within the chapters.
Assessment:This comprehensive pediatric emergency medicine textbook would be a worthwhile addition to the medical library of any physician who treats pediatric emergencies. It is a useful reference that covers the many aspects of this specialty very well. Chapters are well written and contain comprehensive, detailed information.
