Description:Skin diseases in neonates are of interest to dermatologists, neonatologists and pediatricians. The diagnosis of skin diseases in newborns is often difficult and this book fulfills the need for an easy to use reference.
Purpose:The purposes are to delineate the potential cutaneous problems that might be seen in the neonate, to aid in diagnosis, and to offer therapeutic options. This book excels in meeting the needs of those physicians who might care for or be consulted about skin disease in the newborn.
Audience:The book is targeted at clinicians, especially neonatologists, pediatricians, and dermatologists. Investigators might find the state-of-the-art discussions useful to begin to formulate studies that answer questions of etiology, pathogenesis, and management of the many disorders that are not fully understood.
Features:It is well illustrated with excellent color examples of the skin diseases that are covered. Discussion of the current knowledge regarding pathogenesis and management are included for each entity. The editors are recognized authorities and they have selected a superb group of individuals to contribute as authors of each chapter. I have only two minor critiques. First, the references are at least 12 months old and there are very few if any references to articles published in 2000. To produce a text with current references is most difficult, particularly when it is multiauthored. Second, some of the pictures have masked eyes. It would have been preferable for the authors to foresee this and get signed releasesfrom the parents.
Assessment:This is an excellent book. It is a needed addition to the library of practitioners who might care for newborns with skin lesions and it would be a useful text to have in all newborn nurseries. Dermatologists, neonatologists, and pediatricians should find it useful. Although it is a new book, it is a long overdue update of Solomon and Esterly's 1973 text, Neonatal Dermatology. The authors are a "Who's Who" of pediatric dermatology.
