From the Publisher
The fourth edition of Textbook of Clinical Echocardiography presents an accessible primer on this complex topic from Dr. Catherine Otto, one of the foremost teachers and writers in the field. You'll find straightforward explanations of the basics of ultrasound physics, image acquisition, and all the major techniques and major disease categories, as well as the latest on advanced echo techniquessuch as contrast echo, 3D echo, and myocardial mechanics (strain rate imaging, speckle tracking, and synchrony). Each chapterincluding a new one on intraoperative transesophageal echocardiographyfeatures a practical outline called The Echo Exam, ideal for understanding the use of echo and its outcomes. State-of-the-art echo images are complemented by full-color comparative drawings of heart structures. And now, you can access the full text online thanks to Expert Consult functionality.
- Covers all main diseases, including adult congenital heart disease, with a problem-based approach to echocardiography.
- Reviews basic principles for evaluation, the echocardiographic approach, differential diagnosis, limitations, and technical considerations for each disease, as well as alternate diagnostic approaches.
- Enables you to perform procedures correctly and recognize inadequate data with coverage of technical details for data acquisition and limitations of each echocardiographic approach.
- Emphasizes alternative diagnostic approaches to help you solve clinical problems when echocardiography does not provide a definitive answer.
- Includes The Echo Exam (a brief summary of how to do it, the necessary calculations, diagnosis and examples) as anappendix for review and reinforcement.
- Features a new chapter dedicated to intraoperative transesophageal echocardiography, cross-referenced with other chapters, for coverage of this important and difficult technique.
- Covers myocardial mechanicsstrain rate imagine, speckle tracking, and synchronyin the advanced modalities, in addition to contrast and 3D echo.
- Integrates TTE and TEE images more explicitly into each chapter to discuss the two techniques in parallel and give you clear explanations of the pros, cons, and the role of each modality in patient evaluation.
- Includes new digital images throughoutwith more TEE, more echocardiograms, and color diagramsso you can easily identify cardiac problems.
- Presents the latest ASE recommendations for chamber quantification, including updated tables of normal measurements, for convenient reference.

This book provides a concise, well organized introduction to the fields of echocardiographic imaging and Doppler blood flow analysis that offers much of the basic information needed by the beginning student of echocardiography. It makes no pretense at being exhaustive in its coverage, but nonetheless, it is remarkably thorough in the major areas of clinical interest. The integration of technical aspects of ultrasound imaging, physiologic principles, and clinical application is achieved in a seamless and intuitive transition that makes it a delight to read for the clinical echocardiographer. The text serves its purpose well by providing a manageable presentation of basic echocardiography for the trainee in cardiology and the nonphysician sonographer. Much of the technical presentation and pathophysiologic explanations will still be of great interest to more experienced clinicians and other physicians who interpret echocardiographic techniques (e.g., anesthesiologists, cardiac surgeons, radiologists). The text is well illustrated with clear color plates and excellent reproductions of gray scale. Particularly valuable from a didactic standpoint are the clear line drawings and schematics. The usefulness of the reference lists is especially enhanced by informative annotations. This is a well-conceived text that effectively integrates physical principles, pathophysiology, and a clinical approach to echocardiography that would be of great practical use to both new students of echocardiography and more experienced echocardiographers looking for a refreshing review.

Description:This is a comprehensive text covering all aspects of clinical echocardiography.
Purpose:This book is intended to educate the reader about the essential concepts of echocardiography. It is designed to impart the basic principles of echocardiography while at the same time being clinically useful.
Audience:Intended primarily for fellows in training, the book is also an excellent reference for practicing physicians. It not only reinforces the core principles of a 2-D and transesophageal echo, but also discusses newer technologies such as contrast, 3-D echo, tissue Doppler, etc.
Features:Dr. Otto does an excellent job discussing and defining the echocardiographic modalities needed to make a diagnosis, as well as the pathophysiology necessary to treat and risk-stratify patients. The book is divided into 17 chapters that cover topics ranging from basic principles and image acquisition to various cardiac and valvular diseases and their evaluation. The chapters discuss the basic principles, echocardiographic approach to make the diagnosis, technical limitations, and differential diagnoses. Tables and charts are used throughout to summarize studies and allow data to be easily retained. Improvements over previous editions are the colored graphics used as examples throughout. These allow the reader to assess the difference between typical and atypical findings. Towards the end of each chapter, there is yet another unique feature called the Echo Exam, which is a practical outline that summarizes the key features discussed in the chapter and provides the quantitativecalculations used in everyday practice.
Assessment:Echocardiography has become a vital part of today's cardiology practice, assisting the physician in making the initial diagnosis as well as managing patients in a variety of diseases. This is an excellent book to introduce a physician to the field of echocardiography, and is advanced enough to be used as a frame of reference for the practicing physician.

Intended for cardiology fellows on their echocardiography rotation, the textbook is organized by disease category, emphasizing a clinical approach to echocardiographic diagnosis. The updated edition expands the chapter on the normal anatomy and flow patterns into two separate chapters on the normal transthoracic and the normal transesophageal examination. Annotation c.
