    Synopsis

In this highly anticipated sequel to Ruth Downie's New York Times bestselling debut, beloved army doctor Gaius Petrius Ruso strikes out for the uncivilized borders of Roman Britain, where he runs into murder and the ghosts of his vexingly beautiful slave Tillaa (TM)s past.

    Publishers Weekly

Downie's thrilling murder mystery set against the vivid backdrop of the Roman Empire in the year A.D. 118 is well realized by the classical voice of Simon Vance. The reading is perfectly delivered, with Vance's traditional English dialect a perfect fit for this period piece. Vance captures the volatility and rawness of the era, offering rich characters and a compelling saga that never ceases to excite the imagination. Simultaneous release with the Bloomsbury hardcover (Reviews, Jan. 7). (May)

March 19, 2009: This book is easy to get into right from the start. The characters are likeable and I almost missed my subway stop while reading one morning on the train. I recommend this book for fans of history and mystery since it is blend of both.
