The death of high school basketball star Rob Washington in an automobile accident affects the lives of his close friend Andy, who was driving the car, and many others in the school.
Draper's ambitious first novel tackles teenage drinking, suicidal depression and other front-page topics-and relates the action through dialogue or compositions ``by'' the characters. Exuberant after a high-school basketball victory, athletic stars Andy and Robert down a few beers with friends and then ride around in Andy's car. When Robert is killed in an expressway accident, Andy assumes what turns out to be an unbearable burden of guilt. Short chapters in the form of newspaper articles, diary entries and school writing assignments telegraph the community's reactions and Andy's own feelings; these latter are amplified through Andy's conversations with his coach, with his girlfriend and-poignantly-with the psychologist his concerned parents send him to. This quick-cutting, MTV-like approach allows insights into a number of different viewpoints, ranging from Andy's wrenching internal monologues to the ghastly perkiness of the school's ``grief counselor.'' Casting most of the protagonists as African American, Draper also makes some telling (though not terribly new) points about race and racism. Though the issue-oriented plot can get a bit preachy, the combination of raw energy and intense emotion should stimulate readers. Ages 12-up. (Oct.)

November 08, 2009: what would you do if you were blame for your friends death? This is a very dramatic book about death. The main characters are Andy, Gerald, Rob, Kesisha, BJ, Tyrone, Rhonda, Monty, and Dr.Carrothers.In this book the main setting is Hazelwood High School. The book is about a group of friends who are, by their own actions. They drink and drive and their friend gets killed. One of the friends, the driver, is killed by this action. Andy and his friends were unable to rescue their friend, Rob from the accident. "We were all screaming because we could see Rob's feet sticking through the windsheild." "We couldn't get him out!" The last thing I heard Rob say was,"Andy! Andy! Help me-Help me- Oh God, please don't let me die like this! Andy!" The book tells his struggle with the loss of his best friend and deal with his friends and family after such a tragedy.Throughout the book he is very depressed and has a hard time putting the accident behind him. The book was very interesting. The part i dint like was when Andy kills himself. The author manages to bring emotion into the story.would only happen to kids of middle and high school age. All in all,is pretty good, but is a little sad.I would give this book a 9.This is the kind of book i could read over and over and over and never get tired of reading it.
I Also Recommend: Things Not Seen, Bud, Not Buddy, Forged by Fire (Hazelwood High Trilogy #2), Forged by Fire (Hazelwood High Trilogy #2), Darkness Before Dawn (Hazelwood High Trilogy #3).
