Reviewer:Carole A. Kenner, RNC, DNS, FAAN (University of Oklahoma College of Nursing)
Description:This clinical skills textbook uses the backdrop of the nursing process to present the material. It includes an extensive student package of resources from a CD-ROM to a web site with video and audio clips. The last edition was published in 2005.
Purpose:The purpose is to teach skills while incorporating cognitive, technical, interpersonal, and ethical/legal aspects.
Audience:The audience is nursing students or graduate nurses. The author team is very credible.
Features:The book begins with foundational skills, such as vital signs, and moves through normal physiologic responses, such as fluids and electrolytes, on to case studies for application of the information. The case studies section clearly is geared to teach using an integrated approach that addresses safeguards to protect against cross-contamination or infections, documentation, and age-related considerations. Each skill is illustrated with color photos and key points are highlighted in red. Comprehensive rationales are included for the steps. Action steps are noted in a blue box, so the skills are easy to follow.
Assessment:There are many skills books on the market, but this is a very comprehensive one. Its inclusion of a full learning suite of teaching-learning resources places it heads above most other products. This edition is enhanced in the areas of new practice and learning icons to help the student gain confidence in their skill acquisition. New watch and learn icons indicate where video clips are available making this package very appealingfor visual and audio learners. This is a wonderful resource for beginning students.
