Synopsis

The Straight-Talking Former Ambassador Takes Listeners Behind the Scenes at the State Department and the U.N.

A veteran of three Republican administrations and a nominee for the 2006 Nobel Peace Prize, John Bolton reveals how the U.S. can lead the way to a more realistic global security arrangement for the twenty-first century and identifies the next generation of threats to America.

With no-holds-barred candor, he recounts his appointment in 2005 as Ambassador to the United Nations, his headline-making Senate confirmation battle, and his sixteen-month tenure at the United Nations. Bolton offers keen insight into such international crises as North Korea's nuclear test, Iran's pursuit of nuclear weapons and much more. Recounting both his successes and frustrations he also exposes the operational inadequacies that hinder the U.N.'s effectiveness in international diplomacy and its bias against Israel and the United States. At home, he criticizes the pernicious bureaucratic inertia in the U.S. State Department that can undermine presidential policy.

A fascinating chronicle of the career of a distinguished lawyer and diplomat, Surrender Is Not An Option is sure to become a staple for everyone interested in international affairs.

November 27, 2007: This is a very detailed book by that exception among diplomats,an ambassador who actually tries to represent the United States and does not cave in to foreign diplomats and heads of state.A most interesting book written in a GREAT deal of detail some of which is quite tedious and some of which could have been left off.On the other hand the Chapters on North Korea and Iran nuke efforts are quite interesting. If I have any critical comment about this author it is this: Okay use the everpresent 'alphabet soup' of the Government and the United Nations but please have mercy on the poor reader and just make a little appendix page or two and list these acronyms and their meaning. It would make reading of this book a lot easier. Many good historians particularly military and politicasl historians do this.It prevents the infernal leafing back to find the first mention in the text of the acronym in question-very tiresome and time consuming. Otherwise the author is somewhat self laudatory 'like my God which is not',just read Hillary Clinton's book and some others' but his book is well written and shows the UN in particular to be a 'Seinfeld organization'-ABOUT NOTHING!

November 22, 2007: john bolton was the former us ambassador to the un and it was during his tenure that he exposed iran and north koreas nuclear plans for disturbing the peace and he also took a strong stand on terrorism and rough states that threaten israel. this is a man of great principle and courage who understood what the terrorists true aims really were about and and stood for peace through strengh and I was pleased to read such a real bestseller that was hard to put down by someone who put his principles first instead of so many politicans who who give in to outsiders who threaten our country and freedom and israel. great gift idea for the holidays or birthdays.
