...a well written book that is easy to read and very informative.... "...recommend[ed]....It addresses a number of common problems encountered in current oncology practice and...make[s] a very useful guide.
It is unique in its breadth of subject material....The book is well illustrated and visually appealing. It is most remarkable for a consistent outline style throughout the multiply authored chapters. This allows easy use as a reference for specific topics...an excellent addition to a reference library.
This work will be particularly useful to oncologists and oncology nurses who manage cancer patients.... "This second edition includes chapter summaries as well as an increase in the number of charts, tables and figures. Additional chapters have been added to include the areas of complementary care, home care, hospices, terminal care, and fatigue. This is a recommended work for medical libraries and useful resource for the practicing clinician." E-Streams
...[Includes an] extensive chapter on the treatment of infection in neutropenic patients...an issue not usually addressed in palliative care settings....The chapter on obstructive syndromes is detailed.... "...The chapter related to the care of osteoma patients is particularly good, filled with illustrations and practical tips....often neglected in other teaching resources.
This book is a comprehensive handbook of the myriad issues related to helping patients through the course of their disease. Each topic is clearly covered in a well-organized format allowing easy access to the desired information. This second edition is enhanced by more tables, figures, and algorithms, which aid in the delivery of up-to-date information on management of difficult issues in cancer care. Furthermore, added chapters on fatigue, home care, hospice, terminal care, and complementary approaches are both relevant and timely. In this second edition, the editors successfully pilot the synthesis of an all encompassing resource that cuts across the boundaries of specialist care and emphasize the necessity of an interdisciplinary approach in order to optimize comprehensive supportive care for all cancer patients. In an ever more fragmented healthcare system, the value of an interdisciplinary approach to the biopsychosocially complex arena of cancer care cannot be overstated. This work is geared to address the broad range of issues relevant to the interdisciplinary team of supportive cancer care providers: medical oncologists, internists, nurses, psychologists, social workers, chaplains, and pharmacists -- while it clearly has an emphasis on the physician perspective. Each chapter is written by internationally recognized experts in each area. Certainly the editors have demonstrated commitment to promoting the skills, knowledge, and attitudes necessary to advance the field of supportive oncology. The editors have successfully culled the essence of the extremely broad range of supportive oncology issues. The full spectrum of supportive issues in cancer is covered -- frommanagement strategies for graft versus host disease in bone marrow transplantation through survivor issues in the chapter ""Sexual health and function after cancer"" and progressive advanced disease management in chapters entitled ""Care of the patient close to death"" and ""Hospice and palliative care."" Still, even though a wider range of issues are covered and more figures and tables have been added, this second edition may still seem a bit heavy on uninterrupted text to the thorough reader. This is a welcome addition to the growing literature attempting to inform providers that cancer is not just cell division gone awry, but is a chronic illness that affects a person who exists, with their cancer, in the context of their family and community. The editors give hope that there is more to cancer care than simply ""tolerating"" antineoplastic therapy. This book will find its place next to Berger's Principles and Practice of Supportive Oncology (Lippincott Williams & Wilkins, 1998) and Doyle's Oxford Textbook of Palliative Medicine (Oxford University Press, 1995).
"...a well written book that is easy to read and very informative.... "...recommend[ed]....It addresses a number of common problems encountered in current oncology practice and...make[s] a very useful guide."
Unqualified praise for the previous edition... "...It defines a more complete approach to the supportive care of patients than has...been available in the literature.

Description: This book is a comprehensive handbook of the myriad issues related to helping patients through the course of their disease.
Purpose: In this second edition, the editors successfully pilot the synthesis of an all encompassing resource that cuts across the boundaries of specialist care and emphasize the necessity of an interdisciplinary approach in order to optimize comprehensive supportive care for all cancer patients. In an ever more fragmented healthcare system, the value of an interdisciplinary approach to the biopsychosocially complex arena of cancer care cannot be overstated.
Audience: This work is geared to address the broad range of issues relevant to the interdisciplinary team of supportive cancer care providers: medical oncologists, internists, nurses, psychologists, social workers, chaplains, and pharmacists while it clearly has an emphasis on the physician perspective. Each chapter is written by internationally recognized experts in each area. Certainly the editors have demonstrated commitment to promoting the skills, knowledge, and attitudes necessary to advance the field of supportive oncology.
Features: The editors have successfully culled the essence of the extremely broad range of supportive oncology issues. The full spectrum of supportive issues in cancer is covered from management strategies for graft versus host disease in bone marrow transplantation through survivor issues in the chapter "Sexual health and function after cancer" and progressive advanced disease management in chapters entitled "Care of the patient close to death" and "Hospice and palliative care." Still, even though a wider range of issues are covered and more figures and tables have been added, this second edition may still seem a bit heavy on uninterrupted text to the thorough reader.
Assessment: This is a welcome addition to the growing literature attempting to inform providers that cancer is not just cell division gone awry, but is a chronic illness that affects a person who exists, with their cancer, in the context of their family and community. The editors give hope that there is more to cancer care than simply "tolerating" antineoplastic therapy. This book will find its place next to Berger's Principles and Practice of Supportive Oncology (Lippincott Williams & Wilkins, 1998) and Doyle's Oxford Textbook of Palliative Medicine (Oxford University Press, 1995).
