Many have tried to master the slippery slopes of Suicide Hill on their bikes. Marvin's older brother has conquered the hill, but Marvin has steered clear. Until now. The word at school is that Marvin will be taking on the hill with his new mountain bike. But the truth is, he can barely climb on the seat! And the gears--forget about it. How did he suddenly become a daredevil? Does he have to go through with it to prove himself? If Marvin makes it, he'll be a hero. If not, his friends and family may catch the biggest wipeout in history!
Afraid of his new mountain bike, third-grader Marvin finds himself in a desperate situation when he accepts a challenge to ride down Suicide Hill.
Third grader Marvin is in big trouble when a rumor begins circulating that he will ride his new bike down Suicide Hill. His classmates and older students all plan to witness the big event. The trouble is that Marvin doesn't know how his new bike works and he is terrified of the notorious Suicide Hill. When Marvin lets on that he may not be up to the challenge, kids start calling him "chicken." This humorous and wise story about Marvin's dilemma is well-written and entertaining. Kids will easily identify with Marvin and see him through to the plot's winning conclusion. The text and characters ring true in this book, which is the latest title in the publisher's "Marvin Redpost" series. 2000, Random House, and $3.99. Ages 5 to 9. Reviewer: Jeanne K. Pettenati
