October 28, 2007: Bev Walton-Porter's Sun Signs for writers is an amazing resource for writers, both new to the craft, and more established, giving both perspective on our own 'sun sign' based writing talents and quirks, and giving a solid base to refer to for characterization. Though generalized and possibly 'generic' in places, this only served to reinforce and highlight where writers are both the same, and dissimilar - which, again feeds back into producing believable characters and authentic voice. And its the voice that's most important - with an authoritative voice, this book teaches you to embrace, and find your own style, and verve. A highly enjoyable read and a must have reference for any writer.

September 01, 2006: This book melds two completely different subjects into a useful, easy-to-use reference that will help any writer with their career. The structure is easy to follow. The layout is set by sign, so the reader can read about his own qualities, strengths, and weaknesses. The introduction briefly educates anyone who does not normally follow astrology about what they can get from their sign. Each section introduces the sign and gives some background of what to expect from someone who falls into that sign. There are personalized lists for each sign that help with different areas of writing. They list ways to break through writer's block, dealing with rejection, rejection do's and don'ts, giving and receiving criticism, paths to publication, exercises to get creativity flowing, and writers born under that particular sign. As a writer, the particular tips that I have tried before do work for me, but not for other people. The last chapter shows how to create 3-dimensional characters by giving them a sign to create a typical model for that sign. This describes key physical correspondence, typical preferred color, professions they might fit into, what other sign they are best to pair with, their astrological opposite, best signs for adversaries/villains, primary motivations, and primary flaws. The idea is well-explained for even the newest of writers. The ideas in the book are original and easy-to-read. Writers of every type will benefit from Sun Signs.
