Reviewer: Robin Webb-Corbett, PhD, RN, C (East Carolina University)
Description: This book is written for nursing students to facilitate foundational coverage of maternal-newborn nursing. Concepts undergirding this text include a scientific base of information, nursing process, communication, client teaching, critical thinking, and cultural diversity.
Purpose: The purpose is to present a beginning level of maternal-newborn nursing content as simply and clearly as possible. Although maternal-newborn information is increasing there is significantly less clinical time spent in birth facilities. Students must possess the knowledge to work with diverse families and clinical environments. This book is a worthy addition to the field.
Audience: This book is written for undergraduate nursing students. As a foundational textbook, expansion of material is limited, thus sacrificing comprehensiveness, but it is most appropriate for beginning students in the area of maternal newborn nursing. The authors are credible authorities in the area of maternal-child health, with three editions of this book.
Features: Unique features include the book's visual plates, critical thinking exercises with answers in the chapter, drug guides, complementary and alternative therapies, and keys to clinical practice. In addition, color-enhanced boxes attract students and facilitate review of the content. The color plates and photography are expansive and certainly contribute to learning. Nursing care plans and procedure guides are detailed and will assist students in clinical settings. The web links and CD-ROM are both valuable additions. I'd recommend expanding the definitions at the beginning of the chapter. Although the discussion of physiology, pathophysiology, and drug action is comprehensive in some areas, such as in pregnancy induced hypertension, in other areas these aspects could be more fully covered.
Assessment: This is a concise and succinct maternal-newborn foundational textbook. For faculty desiring an easy to read and simplified textbook, this will meet their educational needs. Students will find this book useful for understanding clinical concepts and functioning in the clinical environment at the beginning level. If the desire is for a strong reference in maternal-newborn nursing, this book is more limited. I strongly recommend this book for faculty desiring to present maternal-newborn nursing at a foundational level.
