    Synopsis

Shawn McDaniel is an enigma and a miracle—except no one knows it, least of all his father. His life is not what it may seem to anyone looking at him. Not even those who love him best have any idea what he is truly like. In this extraordinary and powerful first novel, the reader learns to look beyond the obvious and finds a character whose spirit is rich beyond imagining and whose story is unforgettable.

My life is like one of those "good news-bad news" jokes. Like, "I've got some good news and some bad news—which do you want first?"

I could go on about my good news for hours, but you probably want to hear the punch line, my bad news, right? Well, there isn't that much, really, but what's here is pretty wild. First off, my parents got divorced ten years ago because of me. My being born changed everything for all of us, in every way. My dad didn't divorce my mom, or my sister, Cindy, or my brother, Paul—he divorced me. He couldn't handle my condition, so he had to leave. My condition? Well, that brings us to the guts of my bad news.

    Annotation

Fourteen-year-old Shawn McDaniel, who suffers from severe cerebral palsy and cannot function, relates his perceptions of his life, his family, and his condition, especially as he believes his father is planning to kill him.

    Horn Book

The invention of Shawn is compelling, evoking one of our darkest fears and deepest hopes — that a fully conscious and intelligent being may be hidden within such a broken body, as yet unable to declare his existence.

September 19, 2009: After finishing this book i felt like it had just stolen three days of my life. I will never get those three days back. This book kept me on the edge of my seat. I really couldn't wait to turn the page. And then it ended. It was one of the most dissapointing endings i have ever read. The ending was so bad i felt like it ruined the whole book for me. The ending irked me so much, i re-wrote it (just the ending, not the whole thing). If you can handle a disapointing ending, then go for it! Read the book! Because, other than that, it was a pretty desent book that really makes you think. :] I hope this review helped!

April 17, 2009: Stuck in Neutral is about a boy named Shawn McDaniel. Shawn is a four-teen year old boy who is mentally retarded. He can't walk. He can't talk. He can't even control when he blinks. Everyone who meets Shawn thinks he is hopeless and has no idea what is going on, but inside Shawn is aware of almost everything around him.

His father, Sydney McDaniel, who is famous for his Pulitzer- prize winning poem "Shawn" left Shawn and his family when Shawn was only four. He claimed the stress of dealing with Shawn's life was too hard. Although his life is hard, Shawn likes living his life. He knows that everyone thinks he is a vegetable, but he also knows that they are wrong. Thanks to the help of his sister, Cindy, he knows how to read, and he knows what is going on around him.

Shawn is aware his father is debating killing him or not. His father thinks that Shawn's life is pretty much hopeless. He knows Shawn can't even defend himself, but what he doesn't know is that Shawn is fighting for his father to understand that he doesn't want to die.

This book was fairly good. I definitely wouldn't say it was the best book I've ever read, but it is worth reading. It was kind of funny at times, but also very sad at others. I do have so say I was a little disappointed by the ending. I personally think it would be better if you knew what happened to Shawn.
