When Stink buys a mammoth jawbreaker that doesn't break his jaw, he writes a letter of complaint to the manufacturer - and receives a ten-pound box of 21,280 jawbreakers for his trouble! This unexpected benefit of acing the art of letter-writing in school sure gets Stink thinking. Soon Stink is so preoccupied with getting free stuff sent to him that he overlooks a scribbly envelope in the mail pile - until his best friend, Webster, starts acting standoffish and looks as mad as a hornet. Spotlight editions are printed on high-quality paper and with reinforced library bindings specifically printed for the library market. Grades K-4. In Stink's solo adventures, his special style comes through loud and strong! His tales are enhanced by a series of comic strips, drawn by Stink himself, which are sprinkled throughout the book. In honor of Judy Moody's younger "bother," the creators of the award-winning series have put themselves in a very Stink-y mood-proving, once and for all, that you're only as short as you feel.
What child would not love a 10-pound box of candy delivered to their front door? Stink Moody receives one such box containing 21,280 jawbreakers in response to a complaint letter he writes about a "super-galactic jawbreaker" that utterly failed to break his jaw! He gently suggests that the name of the jawbreaker should be changed to the "Super Not-Galactic Mouth Crayon." Having such a mouth watering success gives Stink the incentive to write more and more and more lettersand to ignore anything that arrives in the mail that is not in a box from a company he recognizes as one of his targets. This causes a huge rift between Stink and his best pal, but some excellent life lessons are learned in the end. Each chapter ends with a comic illustrating a common idiom; there is also a list of the 37 idioms used in the book at its conclusion. This is the second installment in the "Stink" series (Judy Moody's little brother) that also includes Stink: The Incredible Shrinking Kid. This book could be used (loosely) as part of an elementary school English curriculum as it pertains to idioms. Recommended as pleasure reading, nonetheless. 2006, Candlewick Press, Ages 4 to 8.

March 16, 2009: My 2nd grader LOVES this series. I wish there were more titles! This is a great series to help move young readers into chapter books. The chapters are not long, always begin with a fun picture or phrase, and usually explain new words (esp. idioms) that are introduced; so it's great for expanding his vocabulary!
