      Synopsis

His blistering guitar playing breathed life back into the blues. Performing night after night - from his early teens to his tragic death at age thirty-five, in tiny pass-the-hat clubs and before thousands in huge arenas - Stevie Ray Vaughan fused blazing technique with deep soul in a manner unrivaled since the days of Jimi Hendrix. The genuineness and passion of his music moved millions. It nearly saved his life. Stevie Ray Vaughan: Caught in the Crossfire is the first biography of this meteoric guitar hero. Emerging from the hotbed of Texas blues, Stevie Ray Vaughan developed his unique style early on, in competition with his older brother, Jimmie Vaughan, founder of the Fabulous Thunderbirds - a competition that shaped much of Stevie's life. Fueled by drugs and alcohol through a thousand one-night stands, he lived at a fever pitch that nearly destroyed him. Musically exhausted and close to collapse, in his final years Stevie Ray mustered the courage to overcome his addictions, finding strength and inspiration in a new emotional openness. His death in a freak helicopter crash in 1990 silenced one of the great musical talents of our time. Stevie Ray Vaughan: Caught in the Crossfire reveals Stevie Ray Vaughan's life in all its remarkable, sometimes unsavory detail. It also brings to life the rich world of Texas music out of which he grew, and captures the staggering dimensions of his musical legacy. It will stand as the definitive biographical portrait of Stevie Ray.

      Annotation

Now available in paperback, here is the bestselling biography of America's last guitar legend, Texas firebrand Stevie Ray Vaughan. Hailed the greatest guitarist since Hendrix, Vaughan emerged from the hotbed of Texas blues to develop a blistering, unforgettable style all his own. "A rich, complete, and loving portrait."--Detroit Free Press.

      Publishers Weekly

Austin-based journalists Patoski and Crawford pen a rousing account of Texas blues guitarist Stevie Ray Vaughan, who died at age 35 in a 1990 helicopter crash. The Dallas-born Vaughan began playing electric guitar in imitation of older brother Jimmie, who founded the Fabulous Thunderbirds. Both brothers were fixtures of the 1960s and '70s Austin scene, which spawned such rock acts as ZZ Top and allowed Stevie Ray to form his own band, Double Trouble. Vaughan's biggest break was playing on David Bowie's 1983 Let's Dance album; when he brazenly rejected Bowie's offer to tour, he garnered music-industry notice. Later, as his career skyrocketed, Vaughan abused cocaine and whiskey. He underwent treatment in 1986, a process which sealed his friendship with guitarist and recovered heroin addict Eric Clapton. Afterward, Vaughan became a preachy proponent of AA's 12-step program; he is reverently portrayed here as an inspiration to troubled fans. Backed up by plenty of blues history, this enthusiastic tribute ably succeeds as a narrative, adopting the down-home colloquialisms of its subject. Photos not seen by PW. (May)

October 08, 2006: This biography on the amazing, yet short life of Stevie Ray Vaughan is a definite must read. Stevie?s amazing career all started when Stevie was a little kid. He became inspired by his older brother Jimmie who played guitar in a famous band. Stevie became obsessed with the guitar and he began playing Jimmie?s hand me down guitars. After Stevie discovered his true guitar talent once he had been in a few bands in high school, he soon dropped out and moved to Austin, Texas. Once in Austin, Stevie formed the band Double Trouble, where he revealed his Texas rock blues playing style. The band quickly became the biggest band in Austin and after much attention by the music scene, the band signed a record deal. After signing a contract the band recorded two albums over the next three years. They soon became a huge hit and started to go on tour playing sold out shows around the country. Once they became big though, Stevie formed a Cocaine and alcohol addiction that got very intense and life threatening. After he realized the extremity of his addiction Stevie checked into rehab and recovered to become a new man, fully focused on his music. Soon after recovering, Stevie recorded more albums , won a Grammy and went back on tour. Then on August 26th 1990, Stevie died in a tragic helicopter crash after leaving a concert he attended. Stevie Ray Vaughan was an amazing musician and an amazing guitarist. This biography tells the true compassion and facts that led Stevie to create a whole new style of rock , and become one of the greatest guitar players known. With inspiration from his idols such as Jimi Hendrix, Stevie helped save the blues by incorporating his amazing power and soul through his playing. This biography went into great depth on the complete life of Stevie and I liked the way the book explained the formation of his amazing musical skills. The biography went into really good detail on who inspired Stevie, how he became who he was , the risks he took etc, to become successful. This book was very inspiring as well for anyone such as myself who is very musically active. One effort the authors could have made was to include more on the tragic death of Stevie. There needed to be more information on the story of the helicopter crash, and the reasons for that event occurring. Also, the authors should of included less information on the drug addiction of Stevie. Even though it was a dark period in his life, the true story of his life should be about the music he created, not his addictions. I recommend this book for anyone who is a fan of Stevie or for anyone who has a true compassion for music. This biography fully describes the life of a musical legend, and it is very inspirational for all music lovers. The book takes the journey on the life of a rising star that changed music forever. Other readings on Stevie Ray Vaughan that I would recommend include Guitar World Presents Stevie Ray Vaughan, by Jeff Kitts. Overall, this Biography was amazing and I would rate it an excellent reading. Five out of Five.

June 29, 2004: As a long time Stevie Ray fan, I was blown away by the discovery of this book. As a long time journalist, I was captivated by the writing style adopted by the authors, and was thrilled by the flow and content of this effort. Truly an awe-inspiring book that provides unlimited amounts of background to help a reader understand what made Stevie Ray Vaughan tick. Particularly compeling is the account of Stevie's relationship with brother Jimmie, although I wish the authors would have explored this vein more deeply, particularly Jimmie's feelings post Stevie's tragic, untimely death. A must read for any SRV fan and an outstanding introduction for anyone just getting turned on to the blues or the Austin music scene.
