Cut-out ladders, windowpanes, overhanging trees, and a trio of little piggies building their three homes: and it’s all on the same page. What a feeling of depth; each vignette seems to have as much action as a movie. Has watching the Wolf get his comeuppance ever been so much fun?
This book, picked up for publication in the United States by Sterling, was first published in the UK by Fernleigh Books; the illustrations have that unique country charm featured in so many English books for the young. Had the illustrations been flat they would have been endearing, but they are multi-dimensional! The front cover announces a "Step Inside" book with "a magic 3-dimensional fairy-tale world" and displays one of the layered pictures that are the special feature of this book. Under a protective clear plastic window, there is a crowded 3-D scene of house building. In the foreground an industrious pig is in the midst of constructing a sturdy house of brick. In the middle distance another pig is putting the finishing touches on a house of sticks, and in the way back a third pig has completed his house of straw and is relaxing with a book. There are six more dimensional scenes larger than the one on the cover, and all of them are executed in three layers above a background, making them stand out in their frames as the pages are turned and the layers are pulled up to provide the depth. The inside scenes are not protected by a sheet of plastic and all the levels can be clearly determined. Little girls will be enchanted and little boys may be curious about how the effect was created. The actively curious can look down on the construction from the top of the book as one of the scenes is opened.
