Description: This is the second edition of a very thorough overview of all the most important and pertinent topics in the field of sports medicine. The first edition was published in 1997.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide a comprehensive reference to aid in the diagnosis and initial management of sports injuries. This is a vast task to take on, but the book certainly meets its objectives.
Audience: The target audience includes practitioners, orthopedists, fellows, residents, and athletic trainers. The book is appropriate for this audience, and I would add that it is a useful reference for anyone involved in sports or who serves an athletic population.
Features: The book covers most topics in sports medicine. It, of course, does not address some of the more obscure and less important subjects. I especially liked the frequent but appropriate use of pictures, charts, and other visual aids. There is no color artwork, but perhaps that is a way to keep the price of such a comprehensive book reasonable. Because it addresses such a broad spectrum of topics, this book does not provide the detail on many topics that some may wish.
Assessment: As a comprehensive book of sports medicine, this one can hold its own with others already out there. It is a useful initial reference for almost any sports medicine topic or issue, but, like other books of its kind, follow-up references may be needed for further in-depth details. This second edition, published eight years after the first, is a necessary update, with the storm of new evidence-based medicine. However, I don't believe an owner of the first edition would find the changes worthy of purchasing the new edition. The updates do keep the book competitive with the other sports medicine books that try to address some of the issues that have arisen since 1997.
