Reviewer:Celso Agner, MD, MSc (University of Illinois at Chicago College of Medicine)
Description:Spine surgery has evolved significantly over the past few decades. Primarily because of the technical advances achieved with better imaging and understanding of the biomechanics of the spine, progress has occurred at a faster pace than expected. A book on the topic is extremely welcome.
Purpose:The purpose is to comprehensively address the management of complex spinal conditions, a valid idea that cannot be overemphasized. The authors fully meet their objectives.
Audience:Neurosurgeons and fellows in spine surgery are the main target for this book.
Features:Multiple authors contribute 172 chapters in this book. It could not be more comprehensive. It spans the anatomical, physiological and, above all, the pathological, clinical, and surgical aspects of both complex and simple spine problems. The pictures are often self-explanatory and the text, readable. The last few chapters are the most welcome, since they discuss the current role of economics in spine surgery, the problems of coding and reimbursement, and the management of complications. This last subject is important, since complications may be seen in anyone's career.
Assessment:This is one of the classics of spine surgery and should be purchased by neurosurgical and general medical libraries.
