Great Escapes: Southern California: Make the most of the SoCal experience by veering toward some unexpected, eclectic haunts: Go "Sideways" along the back roads of the Santa Ynez Valley, find solitude while camping on Catalina Island or the Gaviota coastline, check out San Diego's hip Gaslamp District, and revel in a 50s-style lodge in the desert of Palm Springs. 30 black & white photos, 1 map.

May 22, 2008: This is a different sort of travel book, quirky, fun to read, rather than just a reference work. I like how the book is organized, each chapter a different adventure, and how the author takes a fresh look at what, to long-time LA residents like me, can seem like overly familiar terrain. I've already taken the book's baseball weekend in San Diego, and the whole family thought it was great. We're going to do several more this summer. Great Escapes: Southern California is filled with nice touches, right down to reading recommendations geared to each trip.
