When Bethany Hamilton lost her arm in the fall of 2003 to a shark attack, it looked as if the career of one of the country's top amateur surfers was over. But just ten weeks later, she returned to competition in her native Hawaii, vowing never to give up the sport she loves. She has since earned an indelible place in America's heart by making appearances on 20/20, Good Morning America, The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, and a host of other venues. Now, in Soul Surfer, this extraordinary fourteen-year-old recounts her incredible, harrowing story in her own unforgettable voice.
Bethany has already lived more than a lifetime's worth of triumph and tragedy, and she shares every poignant moment in these pages. Readers learn how she rose once again to the challenges of competition after a life-changing event, how she dealt with the maelstrom of media attention, and how she relied on her faith and innate positive thinking to embrace changes that would undo most people. Written with passion and insight, and filled with thrilling moments of the sport Bethany has come to personify, this is a portrait of American heroism that will captivate readers of all ages.
Bethany Hamilton, a teenage surfer lost her arm in a shark attack off the coast of Kauai, Hawaii. Not even the loss of her arm keeps her from returning to surfing, the sport she loves.
Hamilton, a 14-year-old aspiring professional surfer from Kauai, Hawaii, made headlines last fall after she lost her arm in a shark attack. With the help of writer Berk and Bundschuh, a pastor whom the teen calls her "spiritual advisor," the teen offers an upbeat and candid-if somewhat meandering-chronicle of her life. She opens with the shark attack, then fills in details before and after this tragic incident, giving priority to the topics pinpointed in the book's subtitle. Her fervent faith surfaces often in her account: her church youth group figures prominently in her life, she prays before each surfing competition, she states that "Being tight with God is even more important to me than surfing" and, in discussing "God's plan" for her, states, "if I can help other people find hope in God, then that is worth losing my arm for." Hamilton offers copious background information about her close-knit family and her passion for surfing, as well as expressions of gratitude for the post-attack outpouring of support and donations from friends and strangers. Despite her narrative's sometimes overly zealous inspirational overtones, Hamilton's optimism, determination and resilience (she climbed back on her surfboard within a month of the attack) are undeniably impressive and uplifting and may well reassure teens dealing with distressing or life-altering events. Ages 12-up. (Oct.) Copyright 2004 Reed Business Information.

April 08, 2009: Soul Surfer is a story of faith, fighting, and courage. Bethany Hamilton was a 13-year-old girl who lives in Kauai, Hawaii. Her life goal was to become a great and accomplished surfer. She had been surfing since she was 7, and she was really good and had already won some tournaments and medals. She was surfing on Halloween morning, when a shark attacked Bethany. When she lost her arm to the shark, the doctors told her she would never surf again. Her family, her parents and her brothers Tim and Noah, and friends told her she could do what ever she set her mind to. She set her mind that she would surf again.
I liked this book because she clearly gave the message to never to give up. Even though she lost her arm, and could not do something's that other people could do. Even though it was a book about her life, she focused mainly on the people who helped her get to where she is now. I liked that; it made me think that she was very unselfish. But that did not stop her from trying. She figured out how to surf, and do a lot of the stuff a lot of other kids could. She made a lot of people believe in miracles. You would think that when Bethany lost her arm, she would want her arm back, and back down from anything people said she could not do. But not Bethany. She accepted she would not get her arm back, and figured out how to do things without it. It inspired other kids to do that. Bethany said, "I think I may be able to do more good having one arm than when I had two." This book is best for believers, and for people who love sports and surfing. It might be better for older kids, some of the language is hard to understand.Reader Rating:

March 23, 2009: This book, written by the fourteen year old girl victim of a shark attack, portrays a love that all people need to discover in themselves. For Bethany Hamilton, that love is surfing. Bethany explains, "Surfing is an addiction, a pleasure rush indescribable to anyone who has not experienced it. And when it grabs you it won't let go" (Hamilton pg27). I feel that this book changed my mindset on life and showed me that the commitment to something I love is more important than any material item. For anyone going through a rough stage in their life, I would recommend this book because Bethany never seems to have a negative attitude towards her tragic accident. It will help all readers overcome their struggles in their own lives.
I Also Recommend: Quiet Strength.
