      The Barnes & Noble Review

The remarkable thing about Lawrence Hill's fourth novel, Someone Knows My Name, the life story of an African Muslim girl sold into slavery, isn't her physical survival. Sure, that's wrenchingly rendered and gives the story its heart. But it's the girl's emotional survival, her constant and ferocious fight for humanity that gives the book its considerable soul.

October 03, 2009: Could barely put it down. So well written, extremely well devised characters. Would be a great book for book clubs or schools. At times very heavy, but so worth it! Part of my permanent library!

      I Also Recommend: Shantaram.

September 23, 2009: This was not a good book. Although the subject matter should have been interesting, it wasn't. I think this book could have benefited a great deal if the editor cut out 200 pages. I found myself getting extremely bored and unable to connect with any of the characters. I also found her story to be really unbelievable. Even when she was facing tremendous challenges I was unable to sympathize or care.

I would recommend reading Beloved instead to get an idea of the impact of slavery on a person. Though the black loyalist aspect/history part was unique, it was just not interesting. I'm sorry I wasted my time on this book.
