    Synopsis

Now in paperback, the new novel by Leif Enger, author of the million-copy best seller, Peace Like a River, is a lively, big-hearted redemption tale; an unforgettable, picaresque Western yarn.
In 1915 Minnesota, writer Monte Becket has lost his sense of purpose. His only success long behind him, Monte lives simply with his wife and son until he befriends outlaw Glendon Hale. Plagued by guilt over abandoning his wife two decades ago, Glendon aims to go back West on a quest for absolution. As the modern age marches swiftly forward, Monte agrees to travel into Glendon’s past, leaving behind his own family for a journey that will test the depth of his loyalties and morals, and the strength of his resolve. As they flee the relentless ex-Pinkerton who’s been hunting Glendon for years, Monte falls ever further from his family and the law, to be tempered by a fiery adventure from which he may never get home.
With its smooth mix of romanticism and gritty reality, So Brave, Young, and Handsome examines one ordinary man’s determination as he risks everything in order to understand what it’s all worth, and follows an unlikely dream in the hope it will lead him back home.

The Washington Post - Carrie Brown

So Brave, Young, and Handsome is an adventure of the heart and mind as much as of the body. This second novel from Enger will not move you as deeply as Peace Like a River did, but it is far more than just a hectically plotted cowboy adventure story. A famous literary editor once said, "Never be sincere. Sincerity is the death of writing." But Enger proves him wrong. His new novel is romantic but not silly. It belongs to a golden time at the edge of our collective memory of what life—and stories—were like when the West was young and a tale was something to read aloud at night under the lamplight. The world Enger writes about here is a vanished one, but Enger has brought it back to life by the force of his belief.

August 12, 2009: So much enjoyed the first novel and was looking forward to his next but I found it lacking. For his fans I won't say not to read it because this is just my personal opinion but my suggestion, hold out and purchase it as a bargain book if your are searching for a western novel to read and you want to foolw up with Enger's latest atttempt .

July 20, 2009: With a backdrop against the middle and west of the United States, with elements of pursuit, obsession and redemption, a group of interesting characters are interwoven into a cacophony of subplots with twists and turns. In some ways it reminded me of Huckleberry Finn. The mysterious Glendon on a journey to make amends after many years, the obsession of Charles, the pursuer, the awakening of Monte, the main character, all kept the plot moving. There were subtler themes here, good vs. evil, amends vs. avoidance, care vs. obsession. At times the story took turns which weren't predicatable and, perhaps, believable, but the writing style of the author and the organization of the work kept me going to the end. For a period piece about interesting characters I thought this worth the read.
