October 25, 2008: Snow Falling on Cedars is a beautifully atmospheric love story/murder mystery. It takes place on San Piedro Island off the Pacific Coast. The story alternates from the trial of a Japanese American on trial for murder in 1954 to the background stories of the relevant characters leading up to WWII and after. Snow Falling on Cedars brings up questions of loyalty, racism and forgiveness. The mood of the novel matches it's scenery, dark and stormy. The love stories are passionate and emotional. The writing is beautifully descriptive. David Guterson brings the island of San Piedro and it's inhabitants vividly to life in a novel I'll not soon forget.

January 11, 2008: I had to read this book for a class in school, and after reading the first chapter I was thinking to myself, 'wow, I am NEVER going to get through this!' But after the first chapter 'which includes a lot of introductory detail' I found myself totally swept away by the story. Guterson is a brilliant writer, and his talent is outstanding. This truly is a page-turner, I couldn't put it down. Guterson combines just enough intrigue and mystery with passionate romance and graphic tales of war, resulting in a perfect combination that is complimented by his flowing, powerful words. So I had to read it, and I'm so glad I did.
