    Karen L. Campbell

This is the second edition of a book on small animal internal medicine. The first edition was published in 1992. The authors' goal for this edition is to provide a practical textbook with clinically relevant up-to-date information on the diagnosis and management of the most common disorders in small animal internal medicine. This objective is very worthwhile due to the rapid advances in diagnostic modalities and therapeutic options available to small animal practitioners. What was ""state-of-the-art"" five years ago is rapidly becoming obsolete, thus it is important for practitioners to have current texts such as this in their offices. This book will likewise be useful to students who want to review the more common disorders in internal medicine. The two authors and eight additional contributors are all Diplomates of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine and respected authorities in their individual fields. One criticism of the authorship is the apparent omission of someone knowledgeable in veterinary dermatology -- the text and tables contain out-of-date information relating to several dermatological syndromes and systemic diseases with cutaneous manifestations. It is organized into 13 sections by organ systems and disciplines. Depth of coverage varies considerably; for example, over 200 pages are devoted to in-depth presentations of diagnostic and therapeutic options in cardiology while there are less than 80 pages in the hematology and immunology section. The table of contents is very detailed and there is an excellent index. The book contains over 800 illustrations, many in full color, and many tables and algorithms. This second edition includes updatedmaterial, new pictures, and the addition of new sections and chapters. The extensive use of color illustrations, tables, and algorithms sets this book apart from others in the field. It is more comprehensive than Current Veterinary Therapy and more in depth than Handbook of Small Animal Practice, but not as in-depth as Textbook of Veterinary Internal Medicine.
